Recessed lighting installation

Recessed lighting is the upgrade people notice every day, and the one most often installed badly. Spacing, beam angle and dimming decide whether a room looks considered or looks like an airport.

Layout before fixtures

The number of lights matters far less than where they go. We lay out the positions against the room: what the ceiling framing allows, where the furniture and work surfaces sit, which walls you want washed and which you do not, and where shadows currently fall. Evenly spaced lights across a ceiling is the default and it is rarely the best answer. We will mark the layout and walk it with you before cutting anything, because the one thing that cannot be undone cheaply is a hole in the wrong place.

Installation with minimal damage

Remodel-style housings are designed to install from below through a cut hole, so in most rooms we are not opening up the ceiling. Attic access above makes the wiring run easier and cheaper. A room with a finished floor above takes more work, and we will tell you that before quoting rather than after. We keep the cut edges clean so any patching is minimal, run the circuits properly rather than daisy-chaining onto whatever is nearest, and check the ceiling insulation rating for the housings we use.

Dimming that works

Most complaints about LED downlights are dimming complaints: buzzing, flickering, or a range that drops from bright to off with nothing useful in between. That is a compatibility problem between the dimmer and the driver, not a fault in the idea. We specify dimmers matched to the fixtures, group the circuits so the switching matches how you use the room, and test the full range before we leave. If you want a warmer colour as the lights dim, that is a fixture choice and it is worth deciding at the start.

Common questions

How many lights does a room need?

It depends on ceiling height, room size, the trim and beam angle, and what the room is for. A kitchen needs light on the work surfaces; a bedroom usually needs less than people expect. We will propose a layout for your actual room rather than applying a spacing rule and hoping.

Will my ceiling need patching?

Usually very little. Remodel housings install through a cut hole sized to the fixture, so in most rooms there is nothing to patch. Where we need to open access for a wiring run, we open the smallest area we can and tell you before we do it.

Why do my LED lights flicker on the existing dimmer?

Almost always a mismatch. Many older dimmers were designed for incandescent loads and do not control an LED driver cleanly at the low end. Replacing the dimmer with a compatible model fixes most cases. Where it does not, the fixture driver is usually the cause.
