The naming, and why it confuses people
GTE-Sylvania acquired Zinsco in the 1970s, and equipment from that period carries Sylvania, GTE-Sylvania or Sylvania-Zinsco branding over what is substantially the same design. Homeowners frequently tell us they do not have a Zinsco because the label says Sylvania. From a safety and parts standpoint that distinction does not help them. Separately, the Sylvania name has been used on other electrical products by other companies in other decades, which is why we identify from the panel and the breakers rather than the badge alone. Send us a photo with the door open and we will tell you free what you actually have.
The same failure mechanism
Where the equipment is Zinsco-design, the concern is the same: the connection between the breaker and the bus bar degrades under heat, and in the worst case a breaker can weld itself to the bus so it no longer opens under fault. Nothing about that is visible with the cover on — the panel keeps distributing power normally the entire time. Inspection laboratories that bench-test these breakers report high failure-to-trip rates, though those figures come from organizations that also recommend replacement, so we cite them as what they are rather than as settled fact.
Parts, and why that settles it
Whatever weight you give the testing data, the practical position is not in dispute. There is no current-listed replacement breaker in production for these panels. What is sold as a replacement is either salvaged from another panel of the same vintage and design, or a different manufacturer's breaker that happens to clip in — which voids the panel's listing and can be raised against you on an insurance claim. A panel that cannot be legitimately repaired has reached the end of its service life, and that is true regardless of what any laboratory found.
Common questions
My panel says Sylvania, not Zinsco. Is it the same thing?
Often yes. GTE-Sylvania acquired Zinsco in the 1970s and sold substantially the same equipment under the Sylvania name. The badge does not tell you much on its own, which is why we identify from the panel interior and the breakers. Send a photo with the door open and we will tell you free.
Can the breakers be replaced instead of the panel?
Compatibility depends on the exact panel and the components approved for it. A breaker that fits physically is not necessarily suitable. We assess the equipment condition, approved repair options and replacement scope. If insurance is involved, ask the carrier for its requirements in writing; electrical work does not guarantee coverage.
Does every Sylvania panel need replacing?
Not automatically — the Sylvania name has been applied to other equipment by other companies at other times. That is exactly why we identify properly rather than reacting to the badge. If yours turns out to be sound, we will tell you so.

BEFORE WE QUOTE THE WORK
Sylvania branding needs a closer look
Identify the installation
Sylvania and GTE-Sylvania labels can appear on different equipment. Identify the actual family, model and interior instead of assuming every cabinet has the same construction. Plan replacement around the system’s condition, compatibility and capacity.
Separate replacement from increased capacity
State whether the job changes only the panel or also the service, feeder or meter equipment. Permits, utility coordination, access, interruptions and finish repairs affect the scope. Include circuit identification and testing in the turnover plan.
