Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok) Panel Replacement

Have a Federal Pacific or Stab-Lok panel? Begin by identifying the equipment and the circuits it serves. We can assess the replacement scope and explain where utility coordination or related work may be needed.

Discuss your project

Identify the exact equipment

Share any accessible exterior labels, previous reports or equipment records for the Federal Pacific or Stab-Lok installation. Please do not remove electrical covers to identify it. We assess the equipment and the system it supplies before defining a replacement scope.

Read the CPSC record in context

The CPSC’s 1983 notice, revised in 2011, reports that tested breakers failed certain UL calibration requirements. It also states that the investigation closed without a determination of the breakers’ safety. That record should not be presented as either a safety clearance or a blanket replacement order. The property still needs an assessment of the actual installation.

Define replacement and related work

We review the proposed panel, existing service and connected loads. The scope identifies related conductor, meter, grounding or bonding work where needed, along with utility coordination, applicable permits, inspection and circuit labeling. If an insurer or buyer has requested documentation, share the written request so it can be addressed.

Common questions

Was Federal Pacific recalled?

The linked CPSC notice describes the investigation and its closure without a safety determination. It does not announce a recall. We avoid treating that history as a blanket conclusion about your equipment and assess the actual installation.

My inspector flagged it but my electrician said it's fine. Who's right?

Share both reports, including the concerns and the scope of any assessment already performed. We review the specific equipment and findings before discussing repair or replacement. Operating normally is not the same as a complete condition assessment.

Will replacing it help when I sell?

A buyer, inspector or insurer may request electrical information or corrections. Share the written request so the electrical scope and available completion documents can be discussed. Replacement does not guarantee a sale or an insurance decision.

BEFORE WE QUOTE THE WORK

Record the equipment and define the replacement scope

Identify the installation

Identify the actual Federal Pacific or Stab-Lok equipment and what it supplies. Discuss replacement options and provide any insurer request. Do not treat an unverified listing claim or a single new breaker as proof that the complete installation is suitable.

Separate replacement from increased capacity

State whether the job changes only the panel or also the service, feeder or meter equipment. Permits, utility coordination, access, interruptions and finish repairs affect the scope. Include circuit identification and testing in the turnover plan.
